Thanks for the hand in troubleshooting this, Steve. Looks like the title of the thread turned out to be a misnomer, and the web accelerators are unrelated to the problem, which is Perl 5.10 not being happy with rrdtool, either 1.2.27 or 1.3.8.

And I will be out of your hair. Between 14all and everything-but-the-daily-charts in routers.cgi, this is very workable.

One last thing. Now that I am boldened by compiling rrdtool from source, I might try on my own to install Perl 5,8 without the Synaptic clutches and run it along with 5.10. I went to activestate, where I get my windows Perls, and saw 3 files there, AS, DEB and RPM. If I can ask what is likely to be a fantastically stupid question, if you know which is easier to install please let me know. I understand you don't run a web-based, free-loader, Unix training shop, and will not bug you with this again, no matter how the install goes.

Thanks again for the big help.

Fernando

Update - I was able to install Perl 5.8 from the AS image in activestate, and got routers.cgy running with 5.8,

Nevertheless, I got tangled in the RRDs.pm/RRDs.so web.

It seems the copies I have of those two files are for Perl 5.10. Copying them to where Perl 5.8 expected to see them did not help, because routers.cgi complains RRDs.so is missing a symbol (perl_Istack_sp_ptr). I Oh well, I am way above my head anyway.

Big thanks !!

Fernando

Thanks for the update - so this confirms that it does work with Perl 5.8 but not necessarily with Perl 5.10.

Tobi's going to love this heisenbug

Both Tobi and myself have installed Perl 5.10.0 with RRD 1.3.4 on our test systems (his is Ubuntu, mine RHEL5) but we've not been able to duplicate this.

Of course, if it is a segv problem (which it is) then it is highly dependent on every tiny nuance in the compilation and our setups are not identical to yours down to the byte.

I'm going to keep trying with an actual ubuntu install so we can get the same packages.

Thanks, Steve.

No way I can join the big boys on this one, this is way above my head.

One thing that may be relevant is that Perl 5.10 was working fine with routers.cgi *before* I got smokeping. It is after that install (synaptic--based, in Ubuntu) that things got weird. I wonder if smokeping via synaptics loaded something in the Perl tree that made the compiler unhappy with routers.cgi.

Again, thanks for all the time you answered my questions.

Count me in for answering questions if you have them. I will keep checking this thread, or you can e-mail me at ffeijo "at" pobox dot com.

OK, I checked in the synaptics log and it is official, I started with Perl 5.10 and everything working fine with routers.cgi.

Trouble started when I downloaded smokeping, along with the modules below. This is the update log for that day.

Perhaps one of those libraries ?

So it looks like libdigest or speedycgi then.

Do you use speedycgi for the routers2 script? We use speedycgi here with no problems but you may be on a different version.
