I am looking for a way to use fping to check each of my sites, so when one is unreachable it will send me an email. Has this been done yet? If so can you please send me a link. Thanks,

MRTG is not really the best tool for this. You could use mrtg-ping-probe or similar and then use MRTG thresholding to alert when the RTT is too high, but this would not alert for host down. I'd suggest you look into Nagios, or maybe smokeping.
