How to find a Non-Toxic Mattress Many people spend a big chunk with their lives sleeping. Getting good sleep is among the keys to feeling good and being healthy. Among the best ways to do that is with a good air mattress. And since one from the three ethics of permaculture is actually “People Care”, let’s talk about taking care of yourself. So our old air mattress finally made us uncomfortable enough to take into consideration a new mattress. It had been a decent mattress, an inner spring which includes a memory foam pillow prime. When we bought this, it was great. But after too long it’s worn out, and today it’s high time for you to replace it. Since spent a third of you sleeping, we wanted to look for a good non-toxic natural mattress. Note: This post may contain affiliate links giving us a small commission free of charge to you. Pretty brilliant! What’s in it?! Okay, so here’s the work on mattresses. Most manufacturers are cagey relating to disclosing the contents and sources of these materials. There are a large number of government regulations about flammability, but there’s not much of guidance. So most standard mattress makers use some sort of toxic flame retardant chemicals in order to meet this standard. In reality, the FTC put out a warning to airbed companies about their “green” promises. But if you’re any “green” mattress company trying to make a natural, non-toxic mattress mattress, that option isn’t probable. So what they can instead is use wool along with the mattress, because wool won’t burn, only char. That Foam There’s three common selections for the foam: Polyurethane Storage area Latex Polyurethane foam will be the cheapest, least durable as well as lowest quality foam. It’s mostly manufactured from petrochemicals, and used in couches and a few furniture. This foam is just not very dense and can collapse under pressure. It’s also utilized by cheaper mattress manufacturers in a very layer over the coil arises, because of the lower cost. How To Discover a Non-Toxic MattressIt can furthermore smell bad, like a chemical factory, when it’s innovative. And poly foam is generally made with some fire retardant chemicals. I don’t see poly just as one option for our fresh mattress. Memory foam is in other words polyurethane foam. Again, it’s constructed with petrochemicals. It’s made to slowly sink as you put pressure on the idea. It can be warm to sleep on, along with smells bad when brand new. It can take last week to off-gas those VOCs (volatile pure compounds) before it doesn’t smell too bad to get to sleep on. Because of your sinking, it may be hard to advance while sleeping, and may well disturb another sleeper. It’s far more dense, and so more support than poly foam but not just like latex. And like poly foam, it's got some fire retardant chemicals inside. Latex foam is made by using a vulcanization (stabilizing) process using heat to convert fruit juice latex into latex foam. It usually is made from either rubber trees (preferably harvested sustainably) as well as from synthetic latex made out of petrochemicals. It’s very loyal and responsive and doesn’t torpedo or bottom out. Latex foam can be a very durable stuff, and can last 20 years with little or no breakdown. It is more expensive, but it’s an investment in your well-being. It sleeps nice, and doesn’t have that horrible chemical smell this memory or poly foams accomplish. Latex foam is likewise helpful for side sleepers because of the good support. So for folks, latex wins. And it smells faintly of coconuts whenever you first open the box…. |
